Disk roaming is moving the physical disks from one cable connection or backplane slot to another on the same controller. RAID configuraties zijn configuraties waarin meerdere harde schijven samenwerken. Dit kan zowel softwarematig (door het besturingssysteem of door de 'controllers' op veel moderne moederborden) als hardwarematig (door een RAID kaart) geregeld worden. De verschillende soorten RAID hebben verschillende voor en nadelen. De belangrijkste op een rijtje:
0 - (minimaal 2 harde schijven) Het systeem verdeelt gegevens over meerdere harde schijven, waardoor lezen en schrijven sneller gaat, maar wanneer er 1 harde schijf kapot gaat, gaat alle data verloren.
1 - (minimaal 2 harde schijven) Het systeem slaat dezelfde gegevens op twee verschillende harde schijven op, zodat het falen van 1 van de 2 harde schijven niet automatisch tot verlies van data leidt en het lezen/vinden van gegevens soms sneller gaat.
5 - (minimaal 3 harde schijven) Het systeem verdeelt de gegevens weer over meerdere harde schijven voor grotere lees- (en schrijf)snelheden, maar slaat op een extra harde schijf pariteitsgegevens op, zodat niet automatisch alle data verloren gaat als er 1 schijf kapot gaat. Nadeel bij softwarematige oplossingen is dat het berekenen van pariteitsgegevens veel processorkracht kost.
10 - (minimaal 4 harde schijven) combinatie van RAID 0 en 1.
JBOD - Het systeem 'plakt' de harde schijven achter elkaar, zodat het lijkt alsof u 1 harde schijf ter grootte van alle aangesloten harde schijven heeft. Levert verder geen betere prestaties of databeveiliging dan enkele harde schijven en zou eigenlijk alleen nuttig zijn in het theoretische geval dat u een bestand op zou willen slaan dat groter is dan een enkele harde schijf.
